We live in Bideford EX39 4BD and are on the Westward Ho! transmitter, can you please tell me when we will receive the same programmes as people who live 100o yards up the hill and get thiers from Huntshaw Cross.

Peter Killner: Unfortunately not, as Westward Ho (@ 2mls / 121 degrees) is a PSB only relay, and which unfortunately is something that is unlikely ever to change, this basically due to the purely commercial interests not being willing to contribute towards the running costs of additional multiplexes.
The trade view reception predictor does indicate that it should be possible to receive Huntshaw Cross (@ 5mls / 322 degrees) on the code provided, but I assume that this is might only be because the code area possibly stretches further up the hill you refer to, as otherwise it might have been worth an attempt to receive the main station.

We live in West Yelland (77 Lagoon View, EX31 3LE), and currently are on the Westward Ho! transmitter via a roof mounted aerial. We have just bought a new HD TV, but cannot find the Freeview HD mux on frequency group C22, although this page seems to indicated that the transmitter is broadcasting it. In the shadow of the hill, we cannot pick up the Huntshaw Cross transmitter at all. Why can we not see them from the Westard Ho! transmitter, and are there any other options for pickin up the HD channels?

Steve Morton: Well although the reception predictors indications have on some occasions to be taken with the usual pinch of salt, however what is indicated for your location could not really be much worse, as reception from the Westward Ho! transmitter only gives the BBC as being reasonably reliable for reception but with the ITV and the HD service not as they both indicate variable, this being the most likely cause of your problem.
Regarding the aerial on your roof, do you use any form of booster? but irrespective of whether you do or not you should carry out a manual tune on the HD mux as sometimes a manual tune will pick up what is missed by an auto tune.
The other thing to try is when you enter Ch22 in the manual tune box do NOT press scan or search, as on most equipment (but not all) the strength the signal is being received at is usually indicated, although this does not always mean that it will result in a picture because as soon as "search" or "scan" is pressed the reception threshold system comes into play.
That said though, I do have serious doubts regarding your ability to ever achieve a satisfactory level of reception, as only with Freesat can someone in a location such as yourself really achieve this, plus of course should you manage to obtain reception of sorts you would be limited to a PSB service only.
It would also be of interest to know the model of TV you have purchased.

The TV is a Toshiba 23RL933B. The manual tune indicates that the signal strength on C22 is about midway along the bar - about the same as the other non-HD channels, which we receive well, but the 'quality' indication is at the left hand end i.e. very poor. I must admit that I am not surprised - people nearer the bottom of our road, on the edge of the hill shadow, have installed expensive high gain aerials pointing to the Huntshaw transmitter, presumably so that they can get the full range of services.
Is there anything in the TV set up that I need to change? The internal tuner is claimed to be capable of receiving Freeview HD.

Steve Morton: Unfortunately now that the model number is known it somewhat throws a different complexion on your problem, insomuch that this model is not fitted with a DVB-T2 tuner but only a DVB-T version, and its the former mentioned that is required for actual reception of an HD signal.
Lots of people get caught out with the wording used by a whole host of manufacturers, but "full HD" only really means that the set is HD ready and is capable of showing a full HD image should any external device be coupled into the set via its HDMI sockets.

Steve Morton: Further to what I mentioned regarding your particular model NOT being fitted with an HD tuner, this info being from a technical manual, I had a quick scout around at the various companies selling that model and was quite simply appalled by the constant reference to HD quality being mentioned but without the proviso that it was via the HDMI input.
If you purchased that model purely on the basis of what the supplier advised then you are entitled to either a refund or exchange, reference to this being seen on the undermentioned link (4th article down on the user reviews) where someone else was misled.

Many thanks for this information - you are right! The detailed spec includes this:
DVB-T2 Broadcast systems (RL95 series only)
The RL95, of course, is the larger screen size. I bought the TV through Amazon, and, as it also seems to have trouble maintaining a secure connection to our wireless network, I shall look at returning it for a refund.

For about 3 weeks all itv stations have been getting interference with the picture (small boxes differant colours and no volume) this happening to most people on freeview boxes and with aerial on roof or in loft all getting the same. I know about 10 thats having problems. Can you help to sort this out please.
