Craig Gannon: The Digital UK postcode checker predicts the strongest signal at your location to be from Skipton Town at 127 degrees, aerial Group A , vertical polarisation. This is however a Freeview Lite transmitter and only carries the 3 PSB muxes. To receive all six muxes good reception is predicted from Emley Moor at 148 degrees, aerial group B and horizontal polarisation. Good reception is of course subject to there being no local obstructions (trees or tall buildings) blocking the signal path. Mux BBCA enters service on 7th September 2011. On 21st September 2011 Mux D3+4 and Mux HD begin from Skipton Town and all muxes will be at high power from Emley Moor.

I was just looking for the switchover date for the Skipton transmitter. I looked at the list of channels and when they would become available. Since Skipton is a relay of Emley Moor it seems odd that many of the channels available on Emley Moor are not shown for the Skipton transmitter. It would be nice to think that the opportunity presented by digital switchover to provide an equal and comprehesive coverage for all might havebeen taken. Unfortunately it is no surprise that it has not. After all, Skipton still doesn't have channel 5 on analogue. Probably no great loss but it would be nice to be given the chance to decide!

Richard: I'm afraid that only the Public Service Broadcasters were required by Ofcom to match analogue coverage.

The commercial multiplex operators were offered the option to broadcast from more sites, but they turned it down on cost grounds. They will continue to use the 81 sites they used before switchover. They will broadcast at much higher power, though, so it may be possible to get Emley Moor once it has switched over. If you provide a full postcode I can check this.

Richard: Because Skipton is quite high-power and covers a fairly large number of homes, I would expect it to be high up the list of sites that are considered, if the commercial operators do decide to add more sites.
