Andrew Harris: Could you get ITV1 West on analogue before switchover?
The ITV1 West mini-mux is broadcast from a separate antenna much further down the mast, and aimed into the Cheltenham and Gloucester area - it doesn't have the same radiation pattern as the other multiplexes.
It's also only on one-quarter the power of the others, until mid-October. (Oxford is using the channel for low-power Mux D until 28 September.).

Mike,

No I was never able to get ITV West on analogue before switchover ,signal level being to low.
You say ITV West mini-mux is aimed into the Cheltenham and Gloucester areas and its radiation pattern is different from the other muxs ,will as you say its increase in power in October resolve the situation?
What is the radiation pattern?
Regards
Andrew Harris.

Andrew Harris: If you were unable to get the analogue service, then you will not be provided with the digital one.
A radiation pattern is the configuration put on a digital broadcast - usually in one or five degree segments - to restrict the output levels in certain places. You see see some on the BBC FOI transmitter data - first draft | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page.

flossie: You are using the Garth Hill transmitter, which does not carry the commercial multiplexes.

I would just like to add my comment that we have this ridiculous situation here just NE of Gloucester where we no longer can receive Points West (i.e. BBC West)for the local news. If ITV can do it from Ridge Hill, why not the BBC ? A really stupid situation and very annoying.

John Lees - you are quite right about the ridiculous situation with us able to receive via your aerial ITV West and not BBC Points West, which gives better coverage of our area than ITV West news.
Can I suggest you complain to: your MP, BBC radio gloucestershire, and most importantly e-mail the BBC West regional manager: Lucio.Mesquita@bbc.co.uk

John Lees, andrew mark: The BBC has never provided a West-region service from Ridge Hill or its relays. Given the cutbacks they are having to make, I doubt they would want to do so now.
ITV only started the West service after breaking up the older Central South sub-region in 2007, primarily to put Oxford in with Hannington to form 'ITV Thames Valley'. They put Ridge Hill in with Central West from Birmingham as the served area was considered too small for a separate news service. (Ironically, ITV Thames Valley has ended, and Oxford and Hannington viewers now get the Southampton service.) The three-way divide of Central's news service was a condition of the 1991 licence.
It's more likely that regional services will be closed down, though the Prime Minister - whose constituency is near Oxford - has put pressure on to keep his local service.
