James Lewis: When you say that your older upstairs TV is fine, then although not specifically mentioned as such but are you meaning that the problem with ITV is only associated with the TV downstairs? if it is then this can simply be caused by the tuner used in the downstairs TV being less sensitive, this proven or otherwise by testing the outlet using the upstairs TV, if though the older TV also shows problems on ITV when using that outlet then the signal strength on it must be lower.

Is the socket fed via a two way powered splitter or not?

If on the other hand you are just referring to ITV1 reception in general then mux channels are not necessarily received at the same levels as each other and you could be running at a less than ideal level which would reveal this, test this by carrying out a signal strength test on BBC1 then try it on ITV1.

Brockenhurst

I live in Brockenhurst, which is not a good freeview reception area, but with a class 2 antenna fitted when digital transmissions started, I rarely had problems before the frequency changes in 2012.
Since that time I have picture & sound breakup mostly on Mux Coms 5 channels. The breakup seems to be worse in summer and later in the day.
Presumably some CCI or ACI is to blame.
Would I benefit by fitting an improved antenna?

Cyril Teed: I'm not sure why you say that you are "not a good freeview reception area".

All indications show you should have excellent reception.

Update: we've finally got Freeview reception again. Turns out it was something to do with the masthead amplifier (I didn't even know we had one). I found a Visioin power supply for it in the loft. Upon unplugging it and plugging it back in, the green light came back on and so did our Freeview! Fingers crossed it carries on working. Maybe it just needed a reset?

for Briantist
Brockenhurst is low lying, there are hills between us and the Rowridge Transmitter, and I understand a number of people have had reception difficulties.
However, my digital signal was adequate with before the frequency changes.
Several months ago I made several checks putting a TV directly on the antenna feed (it normally goes through a distribution amplifier in the loft) but this had negligible effect on the picture break up. The antenna was OK before the frequency changes and still seems to be pointing in the right direct. There could be a problem with the antenna or cable or maybe I need a better antenna. Your opinion would be welcome.

Cyril Teed: Turn your aerial for vertical polarisation.

Rowridge broadcasts PSB channels at 200kW horizontally and 200kW vertically.

It broadcasts COM channels at 50kW horizontally and 200kW vertically.

A different aerial is not likely to be required - unless it is broken - because all channels are Group A.

For JB38

Yes my older Samsung upstairs doesn't experience any problems now although it used to experience some signalling problems when downstairs previously, but can't recall the channels.

The newer Samsung downstairs is perfect most of the time its generally in the evenings that we experience the problems but then that's when we're watching the TV, our kids monopolise it before then on different channels.

So from what you're saying the signal strength is lower downstairs? Do you have an suggestions? Our ariel is internally mounted currently but needs to mounted outside soon as we're looking at having the loft converted. This feeds into a splitter which feeds a number of rooms.

Channels affected are all ITV/CH4/CH5 variations (e.g. plus one etc).

James Lewis: JB38 suggestion about putting the upstairs TV downstairs just to check the signal makes sense in view of what you've said - 'although it used to experience some signalling problems when downstairs previously'.

If two TV's are getting a similar problems from the same aerial socket, then there is a problem with that feed. On the other hand, different TV's have different tuners, and they can react in slightly different ways. Samsun might have changed the tuners slightly over the years, which might account for the different signal strength (BTW - is your signal too strong - that can also cause problems).

Your coax to the main room might be corroded, your splitter might not be working perfectly, have dodgy connections, or the socket might be loose, have interference, etc.

Frankly, being in Tucton, you should get great reception from Rowbridge, and if you put the aerial externally, it should be spot on. But if there is a fault in the chain, then there is always going to be a problem.

12:40 AM

James Lewis: Although that said by MikeB is roughly in line with my own views on the subject, I feel that your problems could simply be caused by the signal being fed to the TV's running at a level that's a tad under what would be considered as ideal (i.e: with a good safety margin) hence any slight drop in the level is liable to result in picture glitching problems, you having reported that the problem tends to occur in the evenings somewhat backing this up, of course with variations in the sensitivity between tuners exacerbating the problem.

Another aspect concerns your aerials polarity, as although the signal predictor does not really indicate that much of a difference in reception from the aerial being mounted horizontally to that of vertical, considering the fact that you are using a loft aerial and as such possibly easy to access? then its certainly worth trying it swivelled around 90 degrees to the opposite polarity of whatever way its presently it mounted, as signal propagation can vary between these two polarities and Rowridge does transmit in dual polarities, COM channels being of a considerably higher power on vertical radiation. (H - 50Kw / V - 200Kw)

With regards to loft Vs outdoor aerials, although some of the newer properties fitted with high tech roof insulation can cause problems with reception, however in most cases very little difference is seen in signal strength if the aerial is facing directly through the tiles, even in cases where the tiles are actually wet, that said it does have to be admitted that loft aerials are never that far away from electrical cabling and which is a potential source in electrical impulse interference being picked up, gutter mounts (on soffit or facia boards) being ideal especially if used in conjunction with a Log periodic type aerial.
