John Stone: Rouncefall is not a full service transmitter as it only carried Public Service channels. I see that Sudbury and Rouncefall are only 14 degrees apart from your location and of course Rouncefall broadcasts on the same channels as Sudbury.

Postcode CM9 6AF. I have an old TV set with digibox giving good reception on all channels and a Sony Bravia (less than 1 yr old) on which I get most channels but lousy BBC1 & BBC2 reception. Aerial, serving both sets, is pointing at Sudbury. Any ideas?

Phil: First off, confirm that BBC One is tuned to UHF channel 44 and not that of another transmitter.

I have made two observations:

1. There is a nearby TETRA base station in or adjacent to the car park which is next to the Adult Community Learning Centre. It is the mast with two vertical antennas on.

This could be the source of interference on one channel.

2. The Digital UK Postcode Checker predicts "no" reception of Sudbury's PSBs (BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, HD etc) whilst "good"/"variable" on its COMs (ITV3, Pick TV, Film4 etc).

Whilst such predictors should always be taken with a pinch of salt as they can in no way be accurate in all circumstances, we can but wonder why that might be.

Rouncefall is a single frequency network with Sudbury's PSBs, meaning that it broadcasts only PSBs and that they are on the same channels as Sudbury, something which the digital system allows.

Phil: Prior to switchover, BBC Two analogue was on C44. How was its picture? Perhaps if it is interference from the TETRA station, then it would have affected the old analogue signal.

Phil: If it is interference from the TETRA station, then a filter will probably alleviate the issue.

Search the internet using terms such as <<tetra tvi>> <<tetra dtt interference>>.

(TVI=TV interference, DTT=digital terrestrial television)

Could I ask a quick question about this mast, why was it built in the first place ?

This area would appear to have decent coverage from Crystal Palace, Bluebell Hill and Dover already.

Is it that it is now definitely in Anglialand and the signal from Sudbury (which to my untrained eye at 100kw seems robust compared to analogue level) is reduced to the south east ?

I guess also interference on Sudbury from Heathfield and Tunbridge Wells?

Apologies for technical nature of question rather than "I can't get pick TV anymore", just curious... Brian

brian: I should imagine that it is because Sudbury's coverage isn't so good.

Sudbury PSB channels and Rouncefall PSB channels form a Single Frequency Network. Rouncefall does not broadcast the COMs.

brian: Looking at the photos of the DTT panels at Rouncefall, I would say that they radiate southwards which suggests that it is intended to serve Southend-on-Sea and surroundings:

brian: Of course, Sudbury is in the same general direction, so those using it (in Southend) may well not realise and not need to adjust their aerials.

Thanks Dave.
I think you have the right idea. There are plenty of aerials looking at Sudbury around Southend (although from memory more look south). I guess they were just worried the DTV signal from Sudbury would be too puny with a new null built into it to the south east. Probably explains the other new relays too..
