John Stone: No, that's deliberate.
DVB-T was designed to cope much better with reflections than analogue does. In fact, it does it so well that reflections can actually help. It's possible to set up additional transmitters on the same frequency that transmit the exact same signal, so they look like they're just reflections of the main signal. This only works as long as they are properly synchronized, and the paths from the transmitters to your aerial aren't too different in length. The limit in difference is about 75km for DVB-T and DVB-T2 with the modes we're using.
Using the same frequency from multiple transmitters is called a Single Frequency Network, and it's a great way to improve coverage in an area without signals bleeding too much into other areas and without having to allocate different frequencies. The same technique is used for DAB - the maximum distance between transmitters is much further for DAB and the same frequency is used for the BBC national radio services all across the country.
For best results with the type of aerial normally used, the transmitters have to be in roughly the same direction. For you, Rouncefall is at 7° east of true north and Sudbury at 21°, within the normal zone that aerials pick up from. Your aerial is likely to pick up Rouncefall, helping your reception, without you doing anything.
In fact I think that the signal strength from Rouncefall could be too great. 2.2km away from a 4kW transmitter isn't very far. You would have to remove any boosters, and maybe add an attenuator if you have problems.

Thanks for that info Mike. I have been receiving and watching digital signals from Sudbury for 10 years now, only those channels on ch50, mux D have been a bit iffy some times, although now they are good since February. I have a high gain (17db) antenna and a 15db amp. When Rouncefall starts transmitting the signals are going to be too high and as you say I will have to reduce them. Now I am worried that I won't be able to receive the commercial mux's from Sudbury and as I pay for ESPN (ch48, muxA) I don't think this acceptable. If the channels were different on Rouncefall I could manually tune my receiver to ignore them and only receive those from Sudbury. I think there are a lot of people living south of Rouncefall that will be in the same boat judging by the number of antennas pointing towards Sudbury. Perhaps I am being to pessimistic and it will all be ok, time will tell. John.

I live in Pitsea,Basildon Essex about 8miles from Rouncefall TX. At present our post code lists us as Bluebell Hill, Kent TX is our best signal for full service. With Sudbury as the next best, followed by London TX.
My question is at present our Freeview service is from BlueBell Hill, which offer a full service of stations covered. However as I enjoy watching regional news from where I live, the service on offer at present is ITV Med and BBC South East. Both these stations serve well viewers in North Kent,who can enjoy local regional tv on both stations. However us viewers here in Essex are missing out on regional news etc.
So what I need to know will the Rouncefall TX which takens Sudbury be receiveable in Pitsea, using a standard wideband aerial?
I await your answer.

David Hutson: We can't really offer any detailed advice without a full postcode.
For best results from Rouncefall, you should use a Group B aerial oriented so that the rods run up-and-down rather than side-to-side. However, the transmitter also provides a fill-in function for Sudbury PSB multiplexes - Sudbury and Rouncefall form a 'Single Frequency Network', where the transmissions from both are timed carefully so that in the overlap area, the signals largely reinforce each other. If you're in this overlap area, you should probably aim your aerial at Sudbury as that transmitter provides a full service.
Rouncefall will not transmit the three commercial multiplexes, Mux A/SDN, C/ArqA and D/ArqB. You will need to use a main transmitter for those.

Hi Mike.
Just read your response to David Hutson in Pitsea. You mention that, for Rouncefall, the aerial rods should run up and down (i.e. vertically polarized). I always thought that this new relay was going to be horizontally polarized as it's part of an SFN. Could it be, then, that Rouncefall is both vertical and horizontal? Is this possible?
By the way, I'm in SS3 9TJ and currently pick-up perfect Dover on Freeview with a wide-band log in the loft. Perhaps I should have a go with either Sudbury and / or Rouncefall (V or H). At least then I would receive my local news programmes....

John A.: My mistake, Rouncefall is indeed shown as horizontally-polarized.
The timing of the signals from both transmitters reaching your aerial is critical. Outside the designed coverage area, the signals can conflict rather than help (self-interference). Digital UK's trade predictor shows variable reception whether you point the aerial to Sudbury or to Rouncefall. It only ultimately shows 'good' reception on all multiplexes from Dover.

Hi Mike - thanks for your advice....
Couldn't resist in give the Sudbury / Roucefall combo a try and, bingo, a strong signal - it seemed just as good as Dover. Using a lo-gain log, it has a pretty forgiving angle of acceptance and as there is only around 30 to 40 degrees difference between Sudbury & Rouncefall from my location I'm not sure which one was coming through - especially as they are both transmitting on CH44.
I'm back on Dover again, but will definitely give Sudbury & Rouncefall another go after the next switchover stage on July 20 - and may even consider purchasing a good quality high-gain Group E aerial (covering Groups B and C/D - rather than just a C/D required for Dover) so at least I'll have a choice of mast in the future. At the moment though, my old wideband continues to perform miracles....

Just re-tuned my Panasonic tv and all it is receiving is the new ch44 mux from Rouncefall or Sudbury, nothing else. My Humax receiver on the other hand is receiving all the channels although the one that should have Film 4 and Yesterday on it seems to have disapeared. I suppose that the tv is shutting down it's receiver because of the strong signals. I live south of Rouncefall and can see it from my bedroom window.

John Stone: Rouncefall is only transmitting on one MUX (CH44) until approximately the 20th of July when two others will join it, these being Ch41 & Ch47, the latter being for HD purposes.
Have you actually re-tuned your Humax? as it cant receive any more channels than your TV unless its picking them up from elsewhere, the way to check being to go into the tuning menu and observe the MUX channel number showing whilst on one of these channels.
