Al: The reason for this is because the commercial channels that don't broadcast from Perth relay transmitter choose where they wish (to pay to) broadcast from. With the 80-odd largest transmitters they serve around 90% of the population.
The additional cost to broadcast from the 1,000 or so "filler-in" relay transmitters would roughly double the cost of transmission. Because they operate on a commercial basis, they have decided not to do this.

It is a piece of nonsence that the main transmitter serving the 6th largest urban population in the country only transmits the public channels. I refuse to fill the wallets of Bransen or Murdoch just to get the service 99% of the population can receive for free.

Fraz: You have to look at it as though it was a local council somewhere trying to entice a large department store chain to open a store in their area, but the department store having carried out a survey beforehand and discovered that the profit levels expected from doing so would not justify the cost of opening the store.
This is exactly the same situation as with commercial multiplex operators having gathered information on just how many private companies would be willing to pay / share the operating costs of running a multiplex purely for advertising purposes "before" the multiplex is built, i.e: if only a few are seen to be interested then the operating costs would grossly outweigh any income received from providing the transmission facilities, hence nothing is provided.
The basic principles of capitalism, if it doesn't pay it doesn't get done, or in this case built!!

Fraz: Are you referring to Sheffield?
The main transmitter for Sheffield is at Crosspool and overlooks the city. It does carry all the commercial TV channels as well as transmitters for radio including many commercial stations.
The thing with Sheffield is that it's very hilly, which means which transmitter(s) can be received from can vary quite markedly.
There are filler-in relays in Wincobank and Totley which do not carry the commercial channels.

Hello - Just wondering why we in Perth can't get Channel 10 - ITV? We have three televison sets - all the same.Channel 10 is under the Freeview list in the paper, so is there something we just don't know? Many thanks. Lesley

Joanna - It might be worth you considering the "Freesat" option given your location. It means buying your own receiver with a dish installation. This isn't overly expensive and is a one off cost, but would resolve your limited choice of channels with "Freeview" in your area.

Another option for full freeview service in parts of Perth and a large part of Scone is to pick up the service from Black Hill in Lanarkshire. I've successfully (means no call-backs!) installed aerials in Kinnoul hill area (Glebe terrace) and lots of locations in Scone. Might be the answer.
