Have found the sound level on ITV meridian to be very low, got to turn the volume up alot more than normal to be able to hear properly, since the engineering work done earlier today.

I read that the Patcham relay will be switched to vertical polorization from March 7th, is this correct ? Same for Whitehawk also ?

Dave: I don't believe that that is the case.

The Ofcom document listing transmitters in the Meridian area shows Patcham to be horizontal:

http://stakeholders.ofcom….pdf

Rowridge is having a vertical component added (so it will still be horizontal and will therefore mean horizontal aerials will still work). Whitehawk has always been vertical and remains so after switchover.

If you've noticed some new vertical aerials at Patcham, these are receive aerials pointing at Whitehawk Hill. This due to the change of BBC region of the Bighton TXs from BBC South to BBC SE which is due to happen at DSO. Up till now, Patcham has taken its programme feed direct from Rowridge, but it now needs to change to relaying Whitehawk Hill. Patcham's transmissions will remain horizontal.

This is a dogs dinner. With about 4 to 6 weeks to go, I still don't know which transmitter to use at BN1 8RA. This is despite much research on my part, and very little official guidance. As far as I can gather, the Patcham transmitter will provide about half the channels available on say Whitehawk Hill or Heathfield. As a user of Heathfield as well, I have had Freeview for over three years now with well over 80 channels, yet I still pay the same licence fee and get half the service at Patcham. There are aerials here pointing in all directions and a professional installer recently told me that my horizontal wideband aerial should be vertical for Patcham. Unless I am wrong, Patcham is horizontal, so if this is the professional advice, God help us. Given the low-lying situation, is there any point in trying transmitters other than Patcham? For information, the aerial is a new, 42 element digitally certified type, external, chimney mounted on a 3-m mast aimed at the Hollingbury transmitter.

Mr P.Slater: Unfortunately you are indicated as being served only from the Patcham relay, and which is you know is a PSB only station not transmitting any of the "purely commercial" multiplexes which your licence fee has no connection with.

I would like to confirm that Patcham is one of the exceptions to the rule as far as relays are concerned, insomuch that its horizontally polarised, whereas Whitehawk Hill is vertical.

Mr P.Slater: It is also worth noting there are no digital services from Patcham until 7th/21st March 2012.

Mr P.Slater: And just to add, that although Patcham will undeniably be the best for reception Whitehawk Hill also comes into the equation as from March 21st, and although still being indicated as good its not exactly in the same way as far as reception is concerned when compared to Patcham, however with it being a full service station its worth giving that a try first.
