John Marlow,Londonderry/Derry.In the early hours of Wednesday 10 October 2012,a little after the BBC2 analogue signal is switched off on fr 44,DSO1 will begin.The new higher power BBCA mux on 2kw from the Londonderry/Derry relay will commence broadcasting also on fr 44 around 00:00am (midnight) 01:00am.Two weeks after in the early hours of Wednesday 24 October 2012 the remaining four analogue stations BBC1,UTV,Channel 4,Channel 5 will be forever switched off and replaced by two further new multiplexes D3+4 on fr 41 and BBCB (HD) on fr 47.If your existing (vertically polarised) aerial whether it's a group W wideband,or either group E or group B type gives you stable reception there is no need to change it.Bearing in mind you will not be able to receive SDN,ArqA & ArqB mux's on Londonderry/Derry mast as it will only carry the PSB multiplexes only.If you want the COM mux's if reception allows you,you will however have to realign your aerial to face the main Limavady transmitter polarised horizontally,possibly you may have to upgrade yer aerial if you point it to Limavady itself,a group W wideband X-beam XB22WB antenna or a superior quality group E Yagi 18E antenna using satellite grade black or brown coloured co-ax cable,and importantly fitted with a brass co-ax plug,will give you not only the full package from Limavady itself but also much improved reception from this transmitter itself 20kw powered PSB mux's and 10kw powered COM mux's,compared to 2kw PSB (no COM) mux's from the Londonderry/Derry relay.

Sorry to be repetetive and I am not technically minded at all, but am I to understand that there is no UK freeview reception in Derry from the Sheriff's mountain transmitter UNTIL October 2012. At the moment we can get Saorview with RTE etc, but not the UK stations on freeview. I had heard that this would be switched on in April 2012 ahead of the full switchover in October. However, from reading these posts it seems that nothing 'new' will happen until October 2012. Can someone please confirm that this is correct?

Dermy: You are correct that the Derry transmitter on Sheriff's mountain will not broadcast Freeview until switchover in October. You should also be aware that it will only be a "Freeview Lite" transmitter as it won't carry the Commercial services; it will be for Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs) only. The PSBs being BBC, UTV, ITV2, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Channel 5 and the four HD services.
However, on looking at your road using Google Streetview I can't see any aerials on the Sheriff Mountain transmitter. Most houses have two aerials; one on Limavady and one on Holywell Hill. The former is a main UK station that carries low power Freeview now and at switchover will carry the full range of channels. The latter carries the Republic's services.
Whilst Holywell Hill and Sheriff Mountain transmitters are probably in the same direction from your location, the former broadcasts horizontally polarised signals and the latter vertically polarised ones. So for Holywell aerials will be horizontal (elements flat) as they are and this is the same as for Limavady. Sheriff Mountain aerials are vertical (elements up/down).
Try connecting a Freeview receiver to your Limavady aerial. It "may" be sufficient to receive some or all or the low power services.
Come October, you will still have to rely on Holywell for RT as Limavady won't transmit it.

I live in a poor tv signal area in Derry. With the sheriff mountain transmitter transmitting from October 12 does this mean I will receive a greater tv signal strength?

ken breslin: It depends which transmitter you receive your TV from. When you say "poor TV signal area", which signal are you referring to?
If you are referring to digital (Freeview), then you must be receiving it from another transmitter, probably Limavady, as Sheriff Mountain doesn't broadcast Freeview yet. In which case, if it's a bit intermittent now, then the increase in power at switchover should see that it's more reliable.
See my posting of 18 April 2012 @ 11:09AM to Dermy, immediately above yours. Sheriff Mountain will only carry the Public Service Broadcaster channels, so you will probably want to stick with Limavady if you can.

ken breslin: I should add that you receive from one transmitter or the other, this being dependent on the direction and polarisation of your aerial.
So if your aerial is directed to Limavady, then the introduction of Sheriff Mountain plays no part in your reception. However, at the same time Limavady's power increases which should help you (if indeed you receive from Limavady).

Hi, can I confirm, Holywell hill will be providing the rte channels all of them ?,will sheriffs mountain after switch over provide any station or are all the other stations coming form limavady?
