Hilary: Mike is right, the actual system you want depends on what you can get in terms of signal and services. Every TV will have Freeview (and a decent set should have Freeview HD as standard), so you can use an aerial with anything. Some TV's will have Freesat built in, or a generic sat. tuner.
If your buying a TV, then get the right size (about 2.5 to 3 times size of the screen away from you these days), Freeview HD should be standard, at least 2 HDMI's (4 is best), and most will be smart. Stick to the four major brands (LG, Sony, Samsung and Panasonic) and you should be fine. A 40in or that sort of size in Full HD (you dont sound like a 4k customer) should be around 400-500 at the moment. The Sony W8 in a 43in has pretty much vanished, but grab one if you can - they are never making that set again.
When it comes to a TV, your paying for the best black/whites and the best movement you can. So go somewhere trustworthy and look at it for size and style.

Since the 'beast from the east' very high winds blew through Morecambe recently, our digital signal is still 100%. Our problem is with the 5 or 6 HD channels, the signal is down to 75% and every time a train (we live in South Road) goes past the reception drops out and the returns after the train has gone. Is work or repairs being done on the Lancaster transmitter? Our Postcode is LA4 6JP our aerial is on the roof.

Dave Mason: There are no recent faults or engineering work showing for the Lancaster transmitter. Far more likely that your aerial system suffered some damage in the recent bad weather.

Peter Seddon: Have you checked for any loose or damaged cables and connections? What signal strength and quality readings do you get the channels that are breaking up and what do you get on the channels which are working? Please provide a full postcode so that we can see where you are in relation to the transmitter and your predicted coverage etc.

StevensOnln1: Hi All connections checked and the reception is blocky on just the HD channels from the Lancaster transmitter, channel 21 in DTG6 mode. Diretct TV aerial connection and Humax PVR show the same results. Could it be 4G interference. Post Code is LA3 3AP. All info on the transmitter shows no problems or outages.

Peter Seddon: UHF channel 21 is at the opposite end of the UHF band compared to the frequencies which were sold off for 4G services a few years ago, so 4G interference is very unlikely. You're only 5km away and should be getting a strong signal, perhaps too strong (hence my asking for signal strength and quality readings in my earlier reply). Either you have a fault with your aerial system affecting just the PSB3 mux or you may well have too much signal causing the tuner to be effectively deafened, presenting similar symptoms to the signal being too weak (search this website for an article titled "Too much of a good thing").
