Hi,
I'm getting pretty good reception from Hereford Central Transmitter on the Lucsall Caravan Site HR1 4LP area using vertical polarisation,yet my neighbour has better reception using horizontal polarisation on the same transmitter...It is listed as vertical...Any idea why his is better on horizontal?

colin rees: An aerial at that postcode mounted horizontally will be receiving a signal from Ridge Hill, not the Hereford transmitter.

Hi Briantist,thanks for the reply,we're unable to receive Ridge Hill though,it's 180 degrees the other way and through mountainous area (our side of the the site)...The way it points now is directly toward Hereford Central...Rather strange.

colin rees: The Digital UK predictor says you can receive a signal from Ridge Hill, and your aerial will receive signals from 180 degrees in the wrong direction.

Colin Rees: Briantist is wrong; while the amount of signal received from directly behind is not zero, it is far less than you would receive if the aerial was pointing at that transmitter. On most aerials the level from directly behind is no greater than that received from either side.
Aerial Polar Reponse Diagrams
On those examples, the lobe to the rear is -24 dB or 1/250th of the power (0.4%).
Digital UK's predictor only allows for a maximum of 16 dB of front/back ratio, 1/40th or 2.5%. Its predictions can be a bit pessimistic as a result.
In terms of incorrect polarization, again, some signal from the wrong polarization is picked up. I don't have figures handy, again DUK's model allows for 16dB and I would expect real aerials to better that.
When signals reflect off buildings and terrain, some changes in polarization do occur, so the actual amount received could be larger than the specifications of the aerial would lead you to believe.

Cpt Jack Torrents: HR2 covers too large an area for any element of accuracy, but using Kingstones post office as a marker you are predicted to have good reception from Ridge Hill @ 13 miles away, if that is you are receiving from it! as Peterchurch (@ 4 mls) and Hereford (@ 6 mls) are possibly also within range.
To check if its Ridge Hill you are receiving from carry out a signal whilst on BBC1, the Mux channel shown along with the signal strength should be Ch28, then try the same on ITV1, when in that case Ch25 should be seen.
Although there are a mass of dishes at the complex you mention its unlikely that they would create any problems with UHF reception, unless that is some experiments were being carried out, something that cannot completely be discounted considering the nature of the establishment.

Signal in Kington (HR5, near the church) is rubbish even with a boostbox, it regularly drops out completely or registers as 'bad signal' - Any way to improve reception? Will transmitters be improved?
