jaqueline: You have not provide a postcode so I can't be sure.
Adding an extra connection to a dish should cost around £100, plus the cost of a Freesat box (from £30 for SD).
Freeview Light has the channels listed at the top of the page.

Henley-on-thames
Hi,
I have a new freeview TV and I'm looking to use my roof aerial which, I believe, is pointing approximately ESE.
My current reception is poor and I'm only able to watch a handful of the freeview channels that are scanned. For some reason, the scan does not even pickup ITV1 and ITV2. I get the same results for both the TV and a WinTV PC card when I test separately with the same aerial. So I'm looking to move and/or replace my current aerial and have a few questions :-
1. Which transmitter will give the best reception, both for now and after the digital switchover?
2. How can I identify which transmitter I am pointing to? The software program ScanChannelsBDA_UK shows that my current transmitter is "Network/Region Name = London". Is this Crystal Palace or another London transmitter? How does the Henley transmitter identify itself?
3. Any further advice appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

pms421: The Henley-on-Thames doesn't broadcast Freeview presently. When it does (in April) it will only carry the Public Service Broadcaster channels. Thus, if your aerial is pointing at Henley, then your current digital reception isn't as good as it might be due to this.
See the Digital UK tradeview predictor (click the link next to your posting). It shows the UHF channel numbers used by each transmitter.
It also gives the angle of each transmitter and polarisation. You say your aerial is ENE; if it is horizontal, then you are directed at Crystal Palace. If you get a bit of something at the moment, then come the power increase in April, you "should" get everything without the need for changing aerial.
There is never any guarantee; crystal balls don't exist, hence the "should" can never be 100%. The only way to say for certain is to try it, but from what you describe, it looks very favourable.

Hi,
Thanks first to Dave for the reply last month. I had my aerial taken down over concerns about damage to the roof. The chimney is short, 6-7 bricks high, and the aerial pole large (16 feet), secured to the chimney via a single chimney bracket. The overall effect was that the chimney was cracked and toppling over and the aerial was lopsided, pointing more upwards than directly towards Crystal Palace, which may have explained the poor reception. I have now fitted a new aerial, mounted on the wall, and pointed towards Crystal Palace. I'm happy to say that all is now working, including ITV.
Thanks for your help.
Regards

Please can you help me. I am trying to get DAB radio signal for recently purchased DAB hi-fi radio receiver. I have installed a FM half-wave dipole aerial on the roof but my receiver shows "no service." However I am getting a strong FM reception.
We are located above Henley at Rotherfield Greys at a height of 450ft AMSL.
Postcode: RG9 5LG.
Kind regards,
Brian

Hi, as of 18th April 2012 Henley-on-Thames received digital, I have re-tuned my TV and now receive as shown above channels under BBCA, BBCB, and D3+4. My question is will Henley receive freeview channels such as ITV3, ITV4, etc at a future date ?

Martin Curtis: The Henley relay transmitter is never likely to broadcast them. However, if you are in a location where you can receive from Crystal Palace, then you will probably be able to get the Commercial channels. The Digital UK Tradeview predictor suggests that this may be possible, although an exact answer can only be determined by an installer testing the signal strengths whilst on site.

Re: Freeview Lite: No ITV3 etc. Yes, I have also understood Lite will not carry these (from H-O-T mast), but Crystal Palace works from central Henley if you have a clear view SE ish. Band A Horiz aerial (beware - not same as for H-O-T mast). The signal is much better than pre-switchover and quite reliable. You may need a masthead amp or other booster as it's not strong, although seems pretty clean and stable. Frequent dropouts before due to local noise (fridges etc.), virtually none now. Bigger the aerial the better for noise immunity. If you don't get all channels with auto tune, may be 'cos of weak signal - explore using manual tuning.

I live in Henley-on-Thames the Reading Road area
I cannot get many of the Freeview channels on my TV only about ten. There is not a problem with the TV as it is only about 1year old. Are there any problems with the switchover at the local TV mast at White Hill. My partner lives in Henley also but has his aerial tuned into Crystal Palace and is able to get the full range of Freeview channels.

Mrs Thompson: Unfortunately Henley-on-Thames transmitter does not carry the Commercial channels and is not likely to.
The Commercial broadcasters cover 90% of the population by transmitting from 81 of the largest sites (by viewer population). There are over 1,000 small "filler-in" relay transmitters like Henley and for them to include these would roughly double their cost of transmission whilst only adding about 8.5% of the population to their potential viewer-bases.
As they operate to generate profit by selling advertising which they show to viewers, they don't consider it worth it. What you get from Henley are the Public Service channels only. The Commercial broadcasters have no "Public Service" obligation.
The difficulty with receiving from Crystal Palace in your area is due to the fact that it is in a valley. This is why the Henley transmitter was installed.
In some areas it "may" be possible to receive from Crystal Palace, but this could vary house by house. And in any case, a substantial aerial may be needed.
I went along Reading Road on Streetview and most aerials were on Henley. A few were on Crystal Palace.
The two transmitters are in almost the same direct, but it is easy to tell which an aerial is pointing to as Henley's are vertical and Crystal Palace's are horizontal. See this picture:
