I see that when ITV1+1 started a couple of weeks ago, it was added to the line-up of channels transmitted through Castle Hill (Glossop), but at the expense of ITV2+1. I'd rather ITV gave us ITV3 or ITV4 instead of a channel we already get with a 1 hour delay. It would also be preferable to get something other than C4+1, like Film 4!

Is there any physical reason to prevent the broadcasters giving us these channels? Does it take up less bandwidth to transmit a +1 channel than it does a whole other channel? If not, is there someone we can lobby for a change? I'm sure many people in Glossop would appreciate an extra channel or two.

Jonathan: Sorry, but ITV1+1 has to go on the PSB2 multiplex. ITV1+1 11 January 2011 (at last) | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

The commercial multiplex operators regard this transmitter as unprofitable and declined the offer of frequencies to broadcast from it.

Will the Glossop transmitter ever improve the Freeview or DAB radio service anytime soon?

Hi I wonder if anyone can help? I have replaced my old analogue aerial with a wide band aerial(on the roof)because I could not receive the BBC radio channels. I still can't receive the BBC radio channels. The TV channels are fine, are the radio channels at a lower power? Do I need a high gain aerial? Or would I be better to point towards Winter Hill (new aerial required)

Tom,
You shouldn't have needed to replace your old aerial in order to receive BBC National Radio Channels & Heart via freeview - they are included in the basic PSB multiplexes
relayed by the Castle hill transmitter.
It even is possible to get a useable signal with a indoor aerial
Asssuming your TV picture is ok then the problem lies elsewhere in your equipment.

Having said the above given you have gone to expense of buying a wideband aerial, there is little to be gained by aiming it at the Glossop site.
Depending where you live in the glossop area it may be worth pointing your new aerial at Winterhill (or even Emely Moor) to obtain a much better selection of Freeview channels.

On the topic of DAB...
Whilst it is correct that Castle Hill does NOT transmit DAB it is possible to obtain DAB radio in the Glossop area.
Signals can be received from Picadilly Plaza (City Tower), Winter hill or Holme Moss but because of the topography of the area it depends very much on where you live (even where in the house you have the radio)
In general Digital One (Commercial) coverage is better than that provided by the BBC.

In the long-term Arquiva have plans to upgrade the Glossop relay station to include DAB as part of the move to replace FM with DAB - the plans also include extra masts
at Torside & Woodhead to improve reception for drivers.
