Linda:
Do you mean that you get digital radio services using your Humax Freeview box? Freeview transmit up to 24 digital radio services, see http://www.freeview.co.uk…els, but they are not DAB services.
DAB uses a different way of broadcasting radio services and different transmitters, but the service is not available everywhere. I gather from Huntly Radio, for Radio in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, UK that DAB is available in the Huntly, Aberdeen area but reception depends on proximity to the transmitter and any intervening hills, tall buildings, etc.

Linda: Although your location is seen to be well inside of the official coverage area given for the Knockmore DAB transmitter (15 miles) and to a lesser extent where reception from the DAB transmitters at Durris (35 miles) and also Meldrum (14 miles) is concerned, however in the case of Knockmore and Durris the signal paths from both these transmitters are indicated as suffering from multiple obstructions prior to reaching the Huntly area, Medrum also being affected but to a much lesser degree.
This being the case would suggest that the comment made by MikeP in the latter part of his reply is very likely to apply in your particular situation, and especially so where DAB reception is intended to be via a portable radio, therefore I would suggest it most advisable to make a few local enquiries as to the reliability of a DAB reception in your area before making any purchases.
By the way I used the Huntly Hotel, town square as a test code, if you are located at a higher level than this then obviously that somewhat improves the situation, I would though still make some local enquiries as I am very doubtful as to whether or not a portable DAB radio is a viable device to use in your area.

Thanks for the information. I guess the best idea is to borrow one and try before buying. Only thing is now I'll have to think quick to get an alternative present for my husband's birthday!

Audrey Littlejohn:
Your reception from the Durris transmitter is shown on the 'digitaluk trade' link just below your post. It suggests that reception of the BBCA, D3&4 and BBCB HD multiplexes is likely to be acceptable. However, it shows that reception of the SDN, ARQA and ARQB multiplexes is variable and so cannot be relied upon to always give acceptable reception. It also shows that reception of COM7 and COM8 are poor so will be unreliable at best.
The reason for this is that there are at least 2 sizeable hills in the direct line with the transmitter from your location, both being with 5 km of you. It is well known that such hills will cause poor and variable reception, especially if the weather is wet or even just damp. In the circumstances, there is no alternative transmitter available for you. You may get better and more reliable service using Freesat but you would need to check that the hills mentioned do not obstruct the view from the dish towards the satellites used.

graeme meldrum:
Gartley Moor is apparently operating correctly with no notified engineering works shown.
Check with your immediate neighbours who use Freeview from Gartley Moor to see if they have the same problem. If they don't, then you have an equipment or cabling problem. If they do have the same problem then please report it to the broadcaster.

graeme meldrum: The post code of AB58 3BA is not recognised by any of the reception predictor sites, if though you really meant to type AB53 8BA ? (Auchterless) then reception is indicated as not being possible from the Gartley Moor transmitter, Durris @ 32 miles/174 degrees indicated as being the station that covers this postal code area, although it has to be said that signal level predictions (in dB's) are not particularly good even from that station, as only the three main transmitters (BBC A /D3&4/ BBC B) are predicted as being received with the status of good, three being variable and with two being poor, namely COM7 & COM8.
The reason for this reception problem is most likely down to the signal path from said station suffering from two line of sight obstructions starting from approximately 3.5 miles prior to the postal code area in question, obstructions at the receiving end of the equation always having a greater affect on reception.
