what is wrong with the hd signal coming from fenham. Since the last update in september i am getting quite often "no signal" flashing up on my screen. It is only the hd signal which is new to fenham no problem when i switch back to normal freeview and why is it coming from granada with local news ie itv 6.00 is for granada area.just watching chanel 5 and it has done the same thing.

Like Nick above, I'm disappointed with the reception we get in the area NE8 3J, with a good roof aerial erected a few years ago. Since the full digital switchover, things have been no better than they were with a 20 times weaker signal. We're in the shadow of Carr Hill, which is the reason why our signal comes from Fenham, not Pontop Pike. We can receive all muxes and the signal generally shows as strong. I've removed the redundant signal amplifier we used when analogue was still going. However, there are an awful lot of "glitches" and dropouts - periods when the picture shows some pixellation, freezes or disappears altogether and shows "No signal". This happens both with SD and HD, although we don't tend to see pixellation on HD, just a freeze or complete dropout.
As the signal is good most of the time, I have the distinct impression that the transmitter itself is suffering from interruptions. Is it worth complaining to the BBC, or am I wrong about this?

John Hudson: Looking at the terrain plot between you and Fenham, and working out what is on the high ground in the way I'm not surprised that you are suffering with intermittent poor reception:

The high ground (shown in red as it obstructs the signal path) has the flyover on and there are also a few high-rise blocks that could also potentially be in the way.
Does the poor reception coincide with something such as rush hour and/or rain?
It appears that you reside slap-bang in the middle of the small area that the Felling transmitter covers. It is a relay of Fenham and suggests that the high ground I identified could be an issue in your area.

Thanks for the comment, Dave, but the only flyover is to the southwest of us, whereas Fenham is to the northwest - likewise with the high rise blocks. There are a few three storey flats between our street and the river but I don't think they're in a direct line of sight.
Maybe I need to consult another aerial engineer. The last one we had (a couple of years ago) seemed to know what he was talking about and said we were in a poor signal area but that he'd given us an adequate (roof) aerial; he was also extremely pricey.

Sorry, I should have said that I haven't noticed any common factors about the poor reception except that it seems to occur between about 8.30 and 10 at night on random nights. It may be just that this is the time when we're most likely to watch TV (apart from the period between 5.30 and 7, when I haven't noticed any glitches).

I notice that you have tried to answer john hudson query but ignored mine posted on the 12th dec.
I have line of site from my house to fenham which is just over the river. again, why is the hd transmission so poor since hd was transmitted from fenham on the 26th sept.,and why is it granada, not tyne tees for local news, adverts etc.

nick: Now that you have given your location, one possibility is that the signal level going into your receiver is verging on being too much for your tuner. See:

There are a few ITV1 HD regions and therefore quite a few regions get the HD feed of another. The reason for this is cost as to produce a separate feed for each would necessitate additional equipment.
In reply to your specific question as to why Granada has been chosen, then I guess that they have gone with the regions that are likely to yield the greatest return in respect of number of viewers watching the "correct" adverts.

V.Fenwick: Just to add to that said by Dave Lindsay, the TV or box that you are receiving on has to be fitted with a DVB-T2 tuner to be able to receive HD transmissions, what you are using is most likely only fitted with a DVB-T tuner.
If you provide the model number of whatever you are using this aspect can be checked on, or if you have a manual look under "tuner" in the specifications section.
