It's stated that Eastbourne will have a weak digital signal to avoid interfering with French broadcasts. However other coastal towns nearer France have a perfectly good signal. Is the real reason to do with the secret Government listening station in the underground bunkers in the Beachy Head/Birling Gap & Watling/Herstmonceux region? Officially these were closed but everyone knows they are still in use.

Joe Smith: It is the hills around Eastbourne that are to blame. I don't think that the underground bunkers are to blame for the topography.

Joe Smith: In fact Eastbourne (Old Town) is shown by Digital UK as radiating at 16watts after switchover, Eastbourne relay is expected to be 100watts. These power levels are both greater than those used by the existing analogue services. (Digital transmitters usually use a fifth of the analogue power to cover the former analogue service area.) This would suggest that rather than protecting the French transmissions, the English signals are being reinforced along the South coast in an attempt to deal with possible interference caused when conditions cause strong signals from France to be receivable in the area.

My usual channels in the Eastbourne Old Town area have disappeared today from approx. 10.30 am - and in their place - after I retuned - I have all sorts of radio stations and other freeview stations that I normally cannot tune into. In fact, everyting but what I want - ie no BBC channels ?? I have "Russia Today (RT)" and " AlJaazerah" (apologies for the spelling, perhaps they will go away with the wind...
May be it is to do with the severe winds blowing outside? My aerial is in my rood and has a pre-amp and I have a booster on my main TV socket - or is it the other way round?

The Eastbourne transmitter (South Cliff Tower) was off-air from 10:28 to 22:47 yesterday (Friday).
As I explained in our previous correspondence, the Hastings transmitter uses the same frequencies as Eastbourne, but for those channels which you can't get from Eastbourne. My guess is that when Eastbourne went off the air the Hastings signals are good enough to use. You would have been unable to receive BBC and ITV from Hastings probably because your aerial system is fitted with a filter to only allow through (from the aerial) frequencies used by your designated transmitter.
I imagine that at 22:47 when Eastbourne was turned on again that your reception of the Commercial channels from Hastings would be lost.
You will now have to carry out another retune in order to restore reception of the signals from Eastbourne, this not being necessary had you not carried out the retune this morning.
