Thanks for getting back to me Dave. Yes, there is an aerial on our building facing southeast. We live so central, on a hill, so I'm not sure why we should have poor signal? I think our neighbours receive digital channels fine. Is there anything else it could be?

Liz: Have you tried manually tuning? If the manual tuning screen on your receiver shows signal strength, does it indicate that there is a signal there, but just too low for it to work?

For channel numbers, follow the link to Digital UK Tradeview next to your posting.

Liz: I've had another thought.

Where signals are high power and where some aren't so high power, a receiver can be desensitised by the high power signal, such that it won't be sensitive enough to pick up the weaker one(s).

An analogy would be eyes in bright light are desensitised. When in a room at night with the light on, it is not easy to see outside. Turning the light off makes ones pupils open up and take in more light.

If you have a signal booster, then you probably don't need it (unless perhaps the signal is split to feed multiple sets). You might need to fit an attenuator to reduce the signal level. Hopefully, if it is as I suggest (Mux B's strong signal), then you can reduce its level without diminishing the other multiplexes too much.

See here:

Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

Search eBay for <<variable tv attenuator>> Here is one such example:

LABGEAR VARIABLE DIGITAL TV AERIAL SIGNAL ATTENUATOR 0 - 20dB | eBay

You might be able to crudely attenuate the signal by plugging in the centre pin of the aerial plug only. You will probably only be able to do this if you have a non-moulded plug, i.e. you unscrew and remove the outer part of the plug. If this allows you to receive the missing channels, then you may be best advised to order an attenuator.

I just remembered we have a signal booster so I plugged it in after clearing my channels and then re-tuned. Now we are only missing multiplex 1 (BBC 1,2, News etc). After gaining these channels/multiplexs, do you think we should keep the booster in? And what could be preventing us from receiving multiplex 1? (We do not have any games consoles, VCRs etc just a DVD player that could cause interference).

Liz: The fact that introducing the signal booster brings in all but one of the five missing multiplexes suggests that your problem is *not* too high a signal level as I suggested it could be. You may, therefore, have to leave it in until switchover.

How is your analogue reception?

Can you confirm that your aerial is pointing east towards Whitehawk Hill and is vertical (elements up/down)? Could it be directed at the Rowridge transmitter on the Isle of Wight? (If it is Rowridge it will be horizontal).

Auto tuning gives me BBC stations etc while Digital retuning gives me ITV stations etc, but my main set will not give me all 127 stations at the same time. My second set has everything on it, proving that the antenna is OK. WHat can I do?

I have just got back from business forgetting about the switchover & I had no BBC channels so I retuned my tv the BBC signals are constantly ranging from Good to Poor.

The picture is fine for a couple of seconds but I get a lot of dirty audio artefacts & screen glitches.
I live in central Brighton, seven dials area will the signal strength improve or do you suggest getting a digital signal booster?

Peter P: Your receiver may have tuned to the Brighton Central transmitter rather than Whitehawk Hill. Whitehawk Hill is the main transmitter for Brighton and Brighton Central is a filler-in for some who have difficulty picking up Whitehawk. You are in close proximity to Brighton Central which is on the top of Theobald House, hence your receiver could have picked it up.

You may find that Whitehawk's BBC channels are in your 800s.

To find out which is which, go to the signal strength screen whilst tuned to a channel. Then look for the UHF channel number that it is tuned to. For Brighton Central it is C41 and Whitehawk is C60.

Hello
I too have the same problem. Since the 7th bbc is breaking up. (North Lianes)when i check what channel bbc is on it says channel 24. I tried yesterday a variable attenutor as the signal is now stronger i believe but to no avail. Thanks for any help.

Stephen: BBC on channel 24 is from Rowridge.

Rowridge uses low channels and Whitehawk are high channels. Run the automatic tuning scan with the aerial unplugged up until 50% to avoid Rowridge and get Whitehawk.

Or if it gives UHF channels, get the aerial plugged in for C48 which is the lowest Whitehawk one (from 21st March it will be C51).
