Hi,
I'm hoping you might have an answer to this problem, I bought a new tv today with a built in Freeview HD tuner, and when I first did the auto tuning everything worked perfect, Freeview HD the lot. However, later in the day I got 'no signal' messages on all the Freeview HD channels, all the SD channels work fine, just no signal on the HD channels. So I re-tuned the set and now those channels are gone altogether (ch 50, 51 etc) because the TV can't pick up any signals for those HD channels, tried several times re-tuning but no HD channels. As it's only my first day with Freeview HD, I'm just wondering is this problem quite common, have I just been unlucky with the day I've started, was there a known problem for HD signals in the Wood Green area today? I'm just baffled coz I had Freeview HD and now it's gone, any ideas? thanks in advance.

Hi
I have just bought a Digital Stream HD recorder. It pickes up the SD channels but Not the HD ones. I live in a small block of flats with a communial arial in the roof. We are on a hill in Crouch End. Could this be that the ariel if pointing to Ally Pally (It was installed long before digital TV and we actually have an uninterupted view of The Ally Pally mast) instead of Crystal Palace? Freevie signels generally are a bit weak here and I am using an ariel amplifier.

N Clark: It's not very likely that the aerial points to Alexandra Palace. That's now really only a fill-in transmitter designed to fill a small hole in coverage. It doesn't transmit digital signals yet.
The BBC moved 405-line VHF transmissions to Crystal Palace in the mid-50s, and it was the first UHF transmitter in the country, starting to broadcast BBC-2 in 1962. Alexandra Palace only started broadcasting UHF signals in November 1982, according to an IBA coverage map.

The predictions for your postcode are excellent, so there are two possibilities. First, that the communal aerial system is 'channelized', meaning that each channel is filtered and amplified separately, and the system has not been extended to support the HD frequency.
Second, it's possible that it *does* point to Ally Pally, and that you're actually picking up Crystal Palace simply through the cables in the walls. That would explain why you need an amplifier to get SD signals - if the levels were set correctly on the communal system, and it was designed to handle Freeview, you wouldn't need the amp.
Check the UHF channel numbers for the analogue channels. If you're using Alexandra Palace they should be BBC One: C58, BBC Two: C64, ITV1: C61 and C4: C54. If Crystal Palace, between C21 and C30. C5 comes from Croydon on C37, and if the aerial points to Crystal Palace it should be as clear as the other analogue channels. If not, it will probably be very snowy. See which set of channels is best without the amplifier.
If all channels are snowy without the amplifier, the signals in your flat are too weak all round - talk to the building manager to get them brought up to spec.
If the aerial is pointing to Crystal Palace and analogue is clear (without the amp) but Freeview is weak, the system might not have been updated for Freeview. They will need to sort this out for switchover.
If the aerial is pointing to Ally Pally and analogue is clear, this may have been done to avoid ghosting from CP. This should not be a problem after switchover - digital handles reflections very well. Alexandra Palace will only transmit the three public service multiplexes after switchover, so you'll have to talk to the building manager about the possibility of getting this changed, to get all six multiplexes reliably. (HD is one of the three PSB multiplexes.)

I am having issues with finding the Freeview HD channels. My aerial is pointing to Crystal Palace, my postcode is n8 0qt. I am receiving the SD channels but not the HD. I have HDTV with build-in Freeview HD. So I should be receiving the HD channels. Any idea why I can't get them. I was thinking, should the aerial be pointing to Alexandra Palace instead.
Thanks in advance

Az: The Alexandra Palace transmitter has no Freeview at all until Wednesday, 4th April 2012.
You are expected to get Freeview HD from Crystal Palace, but only until August 2011 due to external use of C31.
At switchover Crystal Palace will provide all channels including the Freeview HD ones.
I would suggest you look at Single frequency interference | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice with regard to C31.

When I tried to get a set-top box two or three years ago the John Lewis man gave up in despair as my flat in Muswell Avenue had no digital signal whatsoever. He said I was in a "blackspot", under the shadow of the hill at Alexandra Palace which was blocking the signal from Crystal Palace. When the Alexandra Palace transmitter goes digital in April, will I be able to receive Freeview? I've been told that my property is not caabled for Virgin and I'm worried I'll have no TV at all come the spring!
