For DAB distribution in the home from the loft box with a roof or loft DAB aerial you will have to change all of the house room wall plates that have a TV/FM splitter because the band does not extend high enough for DAB.This only applies on the earlier built houses prior to 2000.

Why are we continuing with DAB in its present inferior form anyway?.
The EU has recommended several years ago that they will go ahead with DAB plus.
This will give better control of the bandwidth required and for us listeners a much better audio experience.
The portable DAB radio's will also have a reduced demand on their internal batteries as at present they are not practical to be powered by batteries due to the radios high power demands.
We were promised better sound and higher dynamics on DAB than FM but just take a look at the bit rates that most broadcasters are using and you can see why there are other limitations.
Where is the typical 256kb/s + promised by the BBC before DAB's launch,
Rather like the poor bit rates that we have to endure when viewing Freeview!
Its all about Quantity and not Quality and pandering to the lower end of listening of mobile and portable receivers.

Briantist reply: Brian Wright: Due to the large number of DAB devices, it was decided to not use DAB+ in the UK for the moment.
So not for the moment, so will we then have less in the future?. Why wait for more wasted DAB technology to be sold and then switch off FM before we change the DAB system. Its madness.
The same reason that 4K TV's have now been introduced into the high street shops.
Apart from Blu-ray DVD's there is nothing broadcast that will show their superiority.

DAB portable radios priced at £100 (Pure) seem content to make them Mono. Fair enough.
I have £3k worth of hifi equipment and FM is much more enjoyable in dynamic range and audio depth.
There's no doubt that the quality at the studio stage or digital recoding that the dynamic range and stereo sound stage is excellent. The whole listening experience as far as I'm concerned is spoilt by the method of transmission through the "ethos" using the current coding & decoding technology.
Exactly the same reason as Freeview TV has so many limitations.
When you see the extent of the recent BBC's engineering input for the "Prom's" you wonder why it is broadcast in the low bit rates, required to cram in all of this so called listening/viewing Choice

The Chrominance information does not have to have the same bandwidth of the Luminance. As long as the Luminance has a wide bandwidth the Chroma just has to "fill in" between the edges of the B& W luminance. The colour ratio information of the Red/Green & Blue chrominance is 0.59 Green 0.3 Red & 0.11 Blue
By the way you still get cross talk of the Luminance when broadcasts are transmitted on SD Freeview much the same as the stripped shirt problems of Analogue broadcasts. This problem is largely eliminated when you view the same scene on Freeview HD

Returning to the extra BBC HD channels to be available from 10th /12/13 I hope this does not lead to more bandwidth/compression changes which may dilute the existing BBC HD program quality!.
I was viewing BBC HD on a new 65inch 4K TV in John Lewis yesterday & it looked like a reasonable Freeview picture but the sales person was adamant that it was the BBC HD transmission.
I gather after Dec 10th the BBC will have news continuity in HD via the regions ?

I agree but displaying an 1080 source would not please me If I was the manufacturer of the set.
Does anyone know when we can expect the BBC to have HD continuity between the regional news & London news? having to change channels at 6.30 every night from 101 to 1 when ITV seem to have sorted it ages ago.

trevorjharris, You contradict yourself a little by not accepting a pleasant watch of snooker on the BBC (free of interruptions)but you have SKY sports who broadcast plenty of snooker but is spoilt by all of their advert interruptions. I have Sky but only usually watch the sports channels and as for SKY news the wife & I have given up from 6.45 am to 9am because of the amount of adverts that interrupt the papers so unprofessionally.
When I pay £600 per year then its an insult the amount of advertising you have to endure especially all of the betting adds during family daytime viewing.
Give me BBC anytime but unfortunately they have been forced out of most sports coverage due to the high costs. SKY do very little production intervention when covering most sports from the States and hence we have to endure the studio "muppets" discuss all of the time filling mostly boring conversations or watch a computer golf swing simulator!!.
In contrast the BBC when they do cover golf from the States they transmit an hour after play starts and record all of the broken coverage to make a pleasurable continuous coverage with English commentators at the course and not in the UK as SKY do.
I rest my case, if the BBC disappeared we would all be worse off .The BBC is respected all over the world far more than any commercial broadcaster is.

Does he know when BBC national news goes to local news. when we will NOT have to change channels from Freeview CH 101 t0 CH I?.Its so annoying when ITV seem to have the problem solved .

Ian ,not quite.
Any quality transmitted on the HD system will be better quality than the transmitted poor bit rate on Freeview SD. The motion smoothness and the edges when panning shots are present is so much better especially human faces.
Older Film & VT programs recorded the last 20 years which are classified as SD when it leaves the studio will look great when transmitted on HD but when viewed on Freeview SD large screen TV quite poor.
