Hi
This trade has always been riddled with under cutting of supply and installation charges.
If your a well established business that has a good reputation I suggest you keep things as they are and don't get bullied into trading standards like allot of the big boys and or cow boys of this world, otherwise it wont be long till you are out of business.
Just keep in mind these boys are desperate for work and the public in general are not stupid, its the oldest tale in the book that you don't get anything for nothing unless your extremely lucky.
If when quoting a customer over the phone give them a bold part figure and explain if its going to be anymore you will tell them before work commences,If less when job is finalized then happy days for everyone, If they are trying to chop your prices before you even look at the job then you have to decide whether you want the job in the first place, I personally would be reluctant because it would mean cutting corners before you even start the job, luckily they are far and few but it does happen.
Customers who ring around are often just wanting the job done as quick as possible, which is understandable, my only warning to them is a business that can do your job by the drop of a hat obviously has no work, so you should be asking your selfs why?

Hi Ian I didn't know that but not at all surprised
Something else that customers should be aware of is if theres problems with the job thats been done they will never get them back, its like sold as seen.
I had a job come in not so long ago where the customer was wanting advise regarding Mendip reception, the advise I gave them was to steer clear of it due to there location and although I could get it for them with the appropriate equipment it wouldn't be a reliable signal.
So the options advised were either the local relay group (A) combined with Mendip group (E) or Freesat/freeview combined.
Anyway to cut along story short he had been convinced by one of his friends that knew a guy who could get him mendip no problem at all so went ahead and had it done and parted with the princely sum of £350.00.
The customer phoned me up the day before yesterday asking me when is the transmitter was going to be on full power as the engineer had explained to him things will be working correctly once the transmitter is sorted out.
The first thing that comes to mind is I told you so, but in reality both me and the customer lost out because he has already parted with his money and the customer didnt get what he wanted.
The only real winner was the part time rigger who took his money who doesn't want to know the job anymore.

By the sounds of it he has got mixed up and charged you for 2 days Labour instead of two hours, In that case you should of got £350-£400 back depending on his charges.

The only jobs that normally run up around the £650 mark are systems using Triax Multi switchers which include Satellite-Terrestrial combined feeding all rooms with two feeds each, main room three feeds which run into triplex outlets, which gives the customer options of Sky+/Freesat+ and Radio in all rooms.

Hi Ian
That quote is for installation of a set top aerial, all guarantees are void if the customer moves it lol

Hi Andy
We have found over the last couple of months customers in fringe locations like parts of upper weston bath etc experiencing intermittent problems with ch49 and 54, after extensive monitoring where by muxes as well as signal strength are giving erratic readings we are pretty convinced its down to transmitter problems and advised customers to hang on and wait.
Worth taking note if doing new installs in these locations as you could end up barking up the wrong tree if you get my meaning.

Hi Steve
Your pricing is similar to mine which is reasonable charge.
Your message would have created alot more interest if you had followed on by saying what type of downlead you are supplying ie TX100, RG59 etc also gauge/type of mast, lashing assembly be it painted or galvanised and type of aerial.
The reason why I mention this is because material costs to the trade can be well below 50% if installing a typical contract aerial system like we see so much around are neck of the woods.
A part typical example is you can buy a painted 6" corner chimney mount for 99p where as a 12" galvanised cradle mount is £4.50, RG59 coaxal cable is well under 50% of TX100LSF, reason been at the very best RG59 is copper on aloy although have often come accross steel, anything marked with ccl incl cat5e/6 is copper clad .
The typical 6" corner mount is proberly ok using a stub for a mast with 12 element aerial mounted on red brick chimney stack, however with bath stone it not onl;y damages the stack but also rusts.
Nice to here your a proper rigger using chimney mounts as intended unlike some using wall brackets.
Just come from yet another job yesturday at combedown Bath , yet again stack was split bracket together with aerial laying on the roof,
When will riggers and customers alike learn that the mount is the most important part of the job.

Dave

Hi Andrew
Your so right and that's why customers should ask what they are actually receiving for there money far as material types/guarantees.
Aerial types and sizes will or should vary between job to job depending on location/signal quality upon testing, but all should have one thing in common which is build quality
The mounts and mast should at least reflect on what's been fitted and type of location taking into account the weather we have these days is worse than 30-40 years ago.
We normally use 12" minimum cradle type galvanised 1.5" dia 16gauge to a max of 5' then there after 2" dia 16gauge.
And then of course the cable type down lead which needs to have good screening properties no matter how good the signal quality is, We supply TX100LSF.
Sticking to these thumb rules which is actually just plain old common sense means the customer can be expecting at least 2 years guarantee period parts and labour. The install will normally see them through for the next 25-30 years although some of ours have actually clocked 40years and above.

Hi
I know this is totally out of context on this forum but if its OK by you Brian I like to direct a question to any of the lads in the TV Industry that goes back to the early 70s who used to meet up at Alan Drakes business Telefield Bristol Ltd .
I really miss them days what with the banter and exchange of technical information.
Anyone including the lady rigger that used to frequent there please email me and let me know how your getting on.

Hi Mark
The reason why they are offering you work is because of the time of year building up to Christmas, most of us are working flat out like every year and having to turn work down to the ring around customers and concentrate on keeping personal customers happy .
The quiet times in the TV industry is and always has been the month of August then starts to build up 1st week in September.
If you are quite then give them ago and tell them you need to be paid weekly, so then if they default on payment you wont get so badly stung.
Just bare in mind in all probability they will drop you like a hot cake early in the new year when things go back to the normal flow of work but that's just the way it is.
Anyway all the best.
