Lee Johnson:

You should be able to get the 'free to air' unencrypted channels on the Sky box. Without a Viewing Card you will not get a regionalised service but probably the general London-base services instead of thoise local to where a card is registered.

You need to carefully check all the connections between the LNB, at the front of the dish, and the box. You may also need to check the alignment of the dish as that is quite critical.

Dr Basil Polychronopulos:

The coverage maps shown where signals can be received from a particular transmitter. The 'grey' areas are where the signal is not receivable due to terrain blocking them. The location of roads is irrelevant.

As a scientist you should do a bit of research as all the terms used and mentioned are standard terminology for RF broadcasting. Details are readily available on several websites.

The mulitplexing depends on whether it is a T1 or T2 transmitter, they use a form of quadrature modulation. Again, research will tell you.

Jargon it is not, but it is correct technical language that has been used in the industry for many years.

My MSc allows me to understand it, as well as my many years in the industry. So I would have expected a holder of a BSc in electronics to do a bit of independent research.

Joe Willey:

A log-periodic aerial would always be preferable as that will allow you to receive current transmissions as well as those planned for the foreseeable future. Providing your TV equipment is capable of receiving HD programmes (on 101 for example) then you would be ready for the changes planned over the next few years.

A high gain aerial is only needed when the received signal strength is low. At 49% yours is marginal and your might benefit from an aerial with a slightly higher gain, subject to not overloading your tuners.

You may find that you're tuned to the Chesterfield transmitter, or either Emley Moor or possibly Sheffield. The best way to tell is to check which multiplex you get BBC1 on. Check the number and if it's 47 then you are on Emley Moor, if it is 27 then you are on Sheffield, if it is 26 then you are on Chesterfield (which is poor in your location).

Let us know what you find out from the checks suggested.

Ian:

There are no reported problems with the BlaenPwlyf transmitter currently.

Check your signal strength top ensure it is between 50% and 85% on the HD services.

Neil Bell, MikeB and Carole Redgrift:

My LG flat screen LED TV, only 2 years old, has both analogue (via a 3.5mm jack that cuts off the internal speakers) and optical outputs. As I am now suffering from high frequency hearing loss (too many years working with 405/625 line TV sets!) I have connected our Sound Bar via the optical connection but added an in-line optical splitter (from Amazon) and that also feeds a Bluetooth system via the red and white BNC connections on the splitter. So everyone can listen to the sound bar if they want whilst I can listen using my Bluetooth earphone or headset.

Simple with a little thought.

How would you cut
Sunday 26 February 2017 8:43PM

The Government announced last year that they would make it a requirement that ALL viewers will need a licence to watch ALL live and ALL catch-up services, not just those from the BBC. That they have had to draw back from that position was forced on them by the other broadcasters.

I strongly believe that ALL viewers should have a licence for any live and/or catch-up viewing. It will come eventually.
