Below are all of Bill Kocher's postings, with the most recent are at the bottom of the page.Have indulged in a new Samsung 49inch 4K set, I find SD image just awful. We watch very little live TV, despite both being in our 70s. We do watch BBC Breakfast on terrestrial TV and can switch easily between HD and our local news South East, for the often 3 minutes of local news and weather. I put up with what I refer as blurovision' as the program is so short, but want to watch everything in HD if possible. I do have Virgin TV mainly to get the V6 box to record programs and only choice for high speed broadband.
Otherwise we use iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon and Now TV. No satellite allowed on our block of flats so have to make do with terestial. Virgin too difficult to find HD channels as you still have to wade through all the one you haven't subscribed to to get to the free-to-air ones.

We watch most TV via streaming or pre recording. Only live TV we watch is BBC News over breakfast, lunch or tea. We use iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon and Nowtv. But in our flat in Brighton, we can only have terrestrial TV as our block does not have a satellite dish, so no Freesat. Also because it was built in late 80s at time Ntl was cabling up Brighton, now Virgin Media, Openreach never upgraded the cabinet in the street outside, so no fibre available. This means the choise' of broadband providers is limited to any provider who supplies basic lowspeed BB, or pay Virgin for fibre content. So I can only get decent BB speeds by paying Virgin. I have a package that includes TV so I get their V6 box to record programmes. Broadband up to 100mbs, but does drop down to 20mbs at times!
So to get good streaming speeds I'm stuck with Virgin, who have just hiked their bill by 3.50 a month. Package now costing around 49 a month. It includes phone we never use as we use our mobles, but Virgin say it has to be part of package. Also we very rarely watch anything other than free to air channels, the hundreds of extra channels provided are a waste.
Finally just to mention wife and I are in our early 70s, so not typical of pensioners who we are told only watch live TV. And just so you know we are both on the state pension plus some small top ups, not in the fat pension class we also hear about on the news.

Can I just point out all people over 65 do not all fall in to those catagories. My wife and I are in our early 70s. Most of what we watch is either recorded or streamed. Despite being on small pensions, we still subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime and NowTV., as most of what's on main channels is crap. Only TV we watch as it happens are BBC Breakfast and Pointless in the evening.
As we now have a 49 4K tv, so watch everything we can in highest possible def we can. Some progs on Netflix and Prime are in 4K. SD is awful. Watch SD on a small TV and it's OK. I have set our Samsung Freeview channel list up so we can watch news in HD and just flick back one station to see SE today in what I refer to as blur-o-vision.
Also find it annoying that only iPlayer has an HD option. All4 and ITV hub just SD, so make sure we record these channels. Also so we can skip the ads! We watch Walter Presents progs on 4, which mean you can record first episode in HD, but Channel 4 then expects you to see the rest in SD as they only stream the other episodes. So programmes need to be good to keep us watching.

+1 channels. Who watches linear TV any more? And before you say pensioners, we are both in our 70s and use catch-up to watch nearly everything now. Its iPlayer to watch BBC. Still record the odd itv, channel 4 program to spin through ads. Find All4 annoying as still only SD. They offer an add-free version, but I would pay for an ad-free HD version as we like to watch Walter presents programmes. ITV hub sufferers from same low res picture. Come on guys this is 2020, not 1980.

I see HD channels on Whitehawk Hill transmitter now have sound back in sync with picture. Hooray.
