Freeview HD - final dates | High definition
Tuesday 29 March 2011 7:54PM

jack guest: According to the Digital UK postcode checker you should already be able to receive the low power Freeview HD service which along with analogue Channel five, is transmitted from Lichfield on C34. As you say the high power HD service from Sutton Coldfield starts at switchover on 21st September. It may be of interest that you should also be able to receive Freeview HD on C30- from Lark Stoke as from 20th April 2011.

lee: According to the Digital UK postcode checker you should be able to receive the Freeview HD service from both Lichfield (the temporary low power transmission for the Birmingham area) and Nottingham/Kimberley following switchover step2 on 13th April 2011. Note that on that date analogue Channel Five will be switched off at Kimberley removing a major source of interference for East Midland viewers to the Lichfield service on C34. It might certainly be worth having a look at reception following 13th April if you are keen to view the HD channels. As Mike says both now and after switchover Sutton Coldfield will offer the strongest signal with Waltham a suitable alternative for East Mids news.

markie: BBC2 analogue has been switched off permanantly at Nottingham/Kimberley, Sandy Heath and relays at Dallington Park, Luton and Kimpton. You will need to buy a freeview box if you don't already have one and wish to watch BBC2 via an aerial.

ITV 3

Jane: If you are using the Waltham transmitter the frequency for MuxA which carries ITV3 was changed to C29 on 30th March 2011. You will need to clear the channel list (do a factory reset) and rescan for channels. This will also be required on 13th April 2011 when Mux2 changes to C31 affecting ITV1&2, Channel4 etc.

David Luckman: The digital UK postcode checker gives a prediction for Bole Hill and Emley Moor at your location after switchover. I can't help wondering if at present you may be receiving enough signal from Nottingham/Kimberley on C34 (analogue Channel Five) from behind the aerial to block the low power HD signal from Lichfield as you appear to have a good line of sight to the North. It might be worth waiting until 13th April 2011, when analogue signals are switched off at Kimberley, then having another look for the HD Mux.Also check for VCR or Sky boxes with the RF modulator set around C34.

C49 (698.0MHz) after switchover
Saturday 2 April 2011 9:56PM

vanessa: If you are receiving BBC channels on C49 you are tuned to a signal from the Waltham transmitter. The correct frequency for Sandy Heath is C27. If you are not finding any channels on C27 check that your tv or Freeview box is not on the list of equipment that does not support the 8k mode. If it is you will need to obtain a suitable Freeview box to continue viewing after switchover. If your receiver is suitable it may be that the signal from Sandy Heath is too strong. In that case any amplifier would need removing or an attenuator required to reduce the signal strength. Have you tried to do a manual tune to C27? What is the signal strength and quality reading if a signal is found?

Diagnostics - old version
Saturday 2 April 2011 10:30PM

Peter: The reason you did not find any English Freeview channels when scanning is probably because you are not expected to receive any prior to switchover in 2012. The Digital UK postcode checker shows that currently there are only three muxes possible (B,C and D) from the Dover transmitter, and these are given as poor reception. If your aerial is set on the Hythe relay, this is analogue only until switchover when it will carry the 3 PSB muxes only. After switchover Dover is expected to offer all six muxes, albeit with variable reception.

John: I would select Cambridge and Beds 21 services. I am guessing this is Mux BBCA and the others are MuxB options as you dont say which,if any, other muxes were found and channels stored straight away.

Richard: The Digital UK postcode checker shows that there is currently no freeview service available for that postcode. When switchover takes place in September it will make the 3 PSB muxes available via the Wharfedale relay. This is a Freeview Lite transmitter and will not carry any COM muxes.

mark: Indoor aerials tend to be very hit and miss at receiving all possible signals. A different location in the room might give ITV1, Channel 4 etc but lose the BBC channels.Reception is usually better close to a window facing the transmitter if this is a possibility. The digital UK postcode checker shows Maesteg to give the strongest signals on C25 for BBC channels and C22 for Mux D3+4. The Wenvoe transmitter offers good reception on all six muxes with Mux BBCA on C41+, Mux D3+4 on C44 and Mux ArqB on C49. From 27th April 2011 Mux SDN will be on C42+ and Mux ArqA on C45.If possible it would be worth having an outdoor aerial set on Wenvoe for your Freeview reception.
