Michelle & Miloslav Dobrota:

For any meaningful assistance we need a FULL post code, not a partial as you have given - that covers a huge area and is not really any help at all.

Exeter is a fairly hilly area and so the exact location is important. Some areas will not be able to get services from Beacon Hill and others may well not get any from Stockand Hill. Just because a transmitter is nearby does not mean you can get good signals from it - expecially if there are hills or buildings in the way.

With a full post code we can probably be a bit more helpful.

Michelle & Miloslav Dobrota:

Putting the given post code into the Digital UK CoverageChecker at Coverage Checker - Detailed View shows that your location is an afrea with poor reception of all terrestrial transmissions. With the situation likely to become worse later this year, the best solution is to change to Freesat rather than Freeview.

To do that you need to purchase a good quality Freesat receiver, they are available widely and many have a recording facility included. You will also need to have a satellite dish installed that is suitable for your location - I would suggest you have one of at least 60cm and not the poor 45cm type. Fitted with a good LNB (low Noise Block, the black box on the end of the arm) and with at least 2 outputs (so you can record whilst viewing something else). The Satellite box will connect to your TV's HDMI input socket.

Hope that gives some ideas?

Thanks Mike that is really helpful.
it is a shame that a local aerial 'expert' couldnt tell us this, but instead sold us two new aerials etc.
i am curious to know why it will get worse ( it couldnt get much worse).
will look into the satellite route.

Michelle & Miloslav Dobrota:

It will get worse later this year due to changes to the channels used at the transmitter, see Coverage Checker - Detailed View and scroll down to the listing for the prefered transmitter.

That is why I suggested investigating the Freesat option. You do not have to pay any subscription for Freesat.

With the 700MHz clearance, a lot of the local MUXes had significant changes in ERP and I'm curious to know whether this and other factors have led to significant changes in radiation patterns. Have there been significant changes or nothing significant? For instance, the Mendip transmitter's ERP has been halved, while that from Guildford has more than doubled. Oxford and Sutton Coldfield now have two directional beams, rather than one. Is there somewhere where I can view an up to date map of local transmitters and the areas they serve?

There's an OFCOM document with polar diagrams, I see if I can track it down. IIRC there's been no significant changes to coverage apart from where those additional beams were provided.

Try this link https://www.ofcom.org.uk/….pdf

There are two other documents but I think they are just parts of the above. The structure of some of OFCOMs documents has a lot to be desired!
