Single frequency interference

What to do when several channels are missing, but they are all on the same 'multiplex'

What to do when several channels are missing, but they are all
published on UK Free TV

There are several different type of interference that cause problems. This page deals with the situation where:

There are two main causes of this type of intermitted interference: The current Freeview mulitplexes are shown in this diagram. If all of your missing channels are on a single row, you have "single frequency interference":

Local analogue interference

Local analogue interference is caused by household video devices that you can attach to a television such as:
  • Sky Digibox;
  • Video cassette recorder (VCR);
  • Personal digital video recorder (PVR);
  • Games console;
If you have any of these devices, you will need to work out which of these is blocking the reception of a Freeview multiplex by turning off the suspect device and then rescanning for channels on the Freeview box.

If powering off the device restores the Freeview channels from the blocked multiplex, you will need to either stop using the problem device's RF output by disconnecting the RF output cable permanently, or by changing the RF channel number that that device uses. See, for example, How do I change the RF output channel on a Sky Digibox?

You can find a list of the frequencies that are not in use at your location by putting your postcode into the My Freeview reception and looking under the "Free RF channels" section.

Non-wideband aerial in some areas

In some places you will need a wideband aerial to receive all the Freeview multiplexes. For example in Central Birmingham, the Sutton Coldfield has multiplex D on an 'out of group', so you cannot view Film4 or ITV2+1 without an aerial upgrade.

To find out if you need an aerial upgrade, see My Freeview reception.

Hi i have several TVs in my house and they all work fine on freeview apart from the doughters tv which i am constantly having problems with recieving any freeview at all. The tv worked fine untill we moved house. The tvs that are ok are all Toshiba but the doughters is a murphy, we also require a booster that is run from the sky box RF out. Is there anything i can do abought the doughters TV or do i need to buy another Toshiba for her room>

I live in the Manchester area in what I thought was a good signal area. I recently bought a new Freeview HD Panasonic receiver but the HD signal is very weak (Strength 1 according to the receiver). I read somewhere that the HD signal is not yet at full strength in this area. Is this correct? I also cannot receive the low strength local Channel M broadcasts which makes me think that my aerial might need replacing as it's over 25 years old.

Ian Jones: I would see Single frequency interference | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

Freeview HD is at full power.

You probably can't get the MEN multiplex with Channel M at your location as the signal is too weak.

Stix: I would have though you can just buy another Freeview box for the TV that isn't working, assuming it is connected to your rooftop aerial.

laura m: You could certainly try replacing your aerial "fly lead", otherwise contact whoever manages the building to check there is not a fault causing your loss of multiplex D3+4.

Also try this My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

Hi there
We live in GU10 5DR. We have 3 TV's with differeny freeview boxes, all have lost a number of the same channels, any ideas? Nothing has been altered in our house, we do have a new next-door-neighbour (end of terrace cottage), could there be something next door which interferes with us??
Many thanks
Kevin
