Freeview intermittent interference
There are several different types of interference that cause problems. This page deals with the situation where:
- Freeview reception is perfect or near-perfect most of the time
- The audio on TV and radio channels mutes momentarily a few times each minute
- The picture on a Freeview channel freezes a few times each minute
There are two main causes of this type of intermittent interference:
- 'Induction' interference
- Mobile phone interference
Induction interference
Induction interference is caused by mains-powered household devices that contain a large motor, such as:- Washing machine;
- Tumble dryer;
- Central heating pump or combination boiler;
- Fridge;
- Freezer;
- Power tools (drills, jigsaws etc)
- Vacuum cleaners;
- Water pumps;
- Automatic doors
You can identify if one or more of these devices is causing the Freeview reception problem by powering off the devices.
If one of these devices is causing the problem, then the reception problem can usually be solved by using a mains filter device and use it on the Freeview boxes mains connection.
Such as device is this: Maplin: 6-Way Flat Screen and HDTV Surge Protector and Mains Filter.
Mobile phone interference
If you keep a mobile phone by your Freeview box or digital television, keep it further away!This also applies to other transmitters such as baby monitors, video senders, walkie talkies, and portable phones.

I live at L37 2FN and frequently have problems on BBC1 and 2 - poor picture/sound other channels are excellent. Does it depend on weather conditions?

Hi
I live at TN22 4AJ and have never had any problems with FV at all until just before Christmas when MUX 2 went very patchy, to the extend it is no longer watchable. Intermittent sound and picture break up all the time. I am receiving from the Heathfield transmitter which is only a few miles away, i've checked for engineering works, but nothing seems to have affected digital signals. I have tried the above and re-tuned a few times, but no luck. Nothing has changed in the house, but now just get the bad signal. Any ideas? Many thanks!

I receive from Waltham central due to my position in village, I am on a fringe area in LE10, all my TVs and PVRs tune in to Freeview OK, abt 100 stations most with a strong signal. I have just purchased a Technomate triple tuner 2x sat & 1x terrestrial HD tuners, at the moment Waltham are not transmitting in HD. The T2 tuner is capable of receiving standard definition transmissions but when I do a scan it will only install the channels that are transmitting at that time ie BBC 3 or 4 not until 7pm but if I retune sometime before 7am they disappear and are replaced by others. I loop through a Panasonic PVR to the Technomate and then to the TV, the signal is strong and good quality

R nichols: Sounds like you have bought a box without the digital tick.
